MASP Slate Expertise
Slate stone has a unique appearance which features natural clefts that give it a rough, bumpy surface. A major benefit of slate tile is that, because it’s relatively non-porous, it is more stain resistant and less slippery than other stone tile options. This makes it a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
Slate comes in a range of colors, from the more common grays to warmer browns, greens, reds, and even purples. Quality slate is an extremely durable material and will perform well in areas that experience a lot of foot traffic.
There are 3 categories of slate tile surfaces: ‘Clefted’, ‘Honed’, and ‘Polished’. Clefted slate retains the natural clefts on the tile surface, which gives it a more uneven look. Many people appreciate the rustic, natural look of clefted slate.
Honed slate has been polished to a smoother texture, resulting in a more flat and glossy look. This process can dull some of the natural brilliance of the color variations, but provides for a more contemporary and modern look. Honed slate is not perfectly glossy like marble, and will still feature some traction. Honed slate is not as forgiving as cleft slate, as it is more likely to show dirt and chips.
Polished slate results from honed slate that has been polished to an even smoother surface, until it shines to a glossy finish. Polished slate is fairly rare, as slate is not well suited for a high-gloss look.
